Fashion/FineArt/MixedMedia Inspiration

The British Journal of Photography is featuring a photographer (who is a student!!) whose works blurs the lines of fine art, fashion and portraiture.  She is licensing her images to companies (meaning they pay her every time they publish it with their product).

Assignment #1: Classmate as Model

Your first assignment for Studio Lighting will be to use the classmate you randomly chose during class as a model in a series of 10 photographs. The purpose of the assignment is for you to communicate the concept of lighting with which you feel most comfortable and you think is your strongest. As with every assignment for this class, the lighting must be the main character or star of the photograph.
For this assignment, you may use any lighting source that you want.
10 printed 8x10 images are due Tuesday, January 22nd.

"The List"

All kidding aside, there is a list of things that you cannot photograph in my classes - ever. Here they are:

pets, children, homeless people, beer bottles, cigarettes, insides of bars or other place you might be anyway, flowers, bunnies, babies dressed like flowers and other pea pod things, icons (characters, hearts, crosses, anything that is embedded with a story of its own) and anything you photograph as you see it everyday of your life.

So what does this mean? This means that you are expected to put effort into every shoot to create images, not document your life. You may use the above if they are backdrops or models that can be controlled/altered to enhance your image. "Cute," "all I had to work with," "out of time," and "easy" are phrases in which I have no interest. You don't need me or college to pick up a camera and push a button. I am here to push you out of your comfort zone. One day, you will thank me.

Todd Hido has always been one of my biggest inspirations. He looks a the quality of light. And of course, he uses combined light sources. I am a big sucker for combined light sources. When you are photographing at night, don't just look at the light, but what is the light doing for the image? If the answer is "nothing" then do something else.

Daylight Assignment over a Cloudy Weekend

The goal of the project was to not photograph under a super sunny day, but to control the sunlight to create a photographic series where the lighting is the main character. It's not about intensity of light, but controlling the ratio of light and dark. I have no idea how someone would control sun in the middle of a day with no clouds (without lots of fabric or perfectly placed windows)

And, its sunny now.
